    Product Description

Vermiculite Coated Fiberglass Welding Blankets | Heavy-Duty Spark & Slag Protection

When industrial operations demand uncompromising protection against intense heat, heavy sparks, and molten slag, DeBrovys' Vermiculite Coated Fiberglass Welding Blankets deliver exceptional performance. Engineered for rigorous industrial environments, these professional-grade blankets combine the inherent heat resistance of woven fiberglass with a specialized vermiculite coating. This advanced coating significantly enhances the fabric's abrasion resistance, durability, and ability to shed molten metal, making it an essential safety asset for welding, cutting, and heat-treating applications.

Available in three heavy-duty weights—20 oz., 27 oz., and 40 oz. per square yard—our vermiculite coated welding blankets provide versatile protection tailored to your specific operational needs. From light-duty spark deflection to extreme heavy-slag protection, these blankets ensure personnel safety and equipment preservation in the most demanding conditions.

    Advanced Vermiculite Coating Technology

The core advantage of our vermiculite coated fiberglass welding blankets lies in the proprietary vermiculite treatment. Vermiculite, a naturally occurring mineral, is applied to the fiberglass base fabric, creating a robust, heat-resistant barrier. This coating penetrates the fiberglass yarns, dispersing heat rapidly across the surface and preventing localized burn-through from concentrated heat sources like molten slag or heavy sparks.

Furthermore, the vermiculite coating significantly improves the mechanical properties of the blanket. It increases abrasion resistance, reducing wear and tear in harsh industrial settings. The coating also helps bind the fiberglass fibers, minimizing airborne particulates and making the blanket safer and more comfortable to handle compared to uncoated fiberglass alternatives.

    Available Weights and Applications

To meet diverse industrial requirements, DeBrovys offers vermiculite coated welding blankets in three distinct weights, each optimized for specific applications:

    • 20 oz. Vermiculite Coated Blanket: Ideal for light to medium-duty applications. It provides excellent protection against sparks, spatter, and light slag during standard welding and grinding operations. Its lighter weight offers superior flexibility for draping over complex shapes.
    • 27 oz. Vermiculite Coated Blanket: The versatile standard for medium to heavy-duty applications. It offers a robust balance of flexibility and enhanced protection against heavier sparks and moderate slag, suitable for most industrial welding environments.
    • 40 oz. Vermiculite Coated Blanket: Designed for extreme-duty applications. This heavyweight blanket provides maximum protection against heavy molten slag, intense heat, and prolonged exposure during heavy cutting and gouging operations.

Key Features of Vermiculite Coated Welding Blankets

    • Exceptional Heat Resistance: Withstands continuous operating temperatures up to 1500°F (815°C) and intermittent spikes up to 2000°F (1093°C), ensuring reliable thermal protection.
    • Superior Slag Shedding: The vermiculite coating effectively sheds molten metal and heavy slag, preventing the material from sticking and burning through the fabric.
    • Enhanced Durability: The coating significantly increases abrasion resistance, extending the blanket's lifespan even in rugged industrial environments.
    • Flexible and Easy to Handle: Despite their heavy-duty construction, these blankets remain flexible, allowing for easy draping over equipment and structures. The coating also reduces skin irritation commonly associated with raw fiberglass.
    • Reinforced Construction: All blankets feature heavy-duty stitched hems to prevent fraying and brass grommets spaced every 24 inches for secure hanging and positioning as welding curtains.

    Applications in Industrial Environments

Vermiculite coated fiberglass welding blankets are indispensable in a wide range of industrial settings where heat and spark protection are paramount. Common applications include:

    • Welding and Fabrication Shops: Protecting personnel, equipment, and surrounding structures from sparks, spatter, and radiant heat during MIG, TIG, and Stick welding.
    • Shipbuilding and Repair: Providing heavy-duty protection against slag and intense heat during hull fabrication and repair operations.
    • Oil and Gas Refineries: Ensuring safety during maintenance and repair work in hazardous environments where spark containment is critical.
    • Construction Sites: Protecting building materials, scaffolding, and personnel during on-site welding and cutting tasks.
    • Automotive Manufacturing: Shielding sensitive components and painted surfaces from sparks and heat during assembly and repair.

    Proper Usage and Maintenance

To maximize the lifespan and effectiveness of your vermiculite coated welding blanket, follow these usage and maintenance guidelines:

    • Positioning: Hang or drape the blanket securely using the provided grommets. Ensure the blanket covers the entire area requiring protection, leaving no gaps for sparks or slag to penetrate.
    • Angle: Whenever possible, position the blanket at an angle rather than horizontally. This encourages molten slag to roll off the surface rather than pooling and burning through.
    • Inspection: Regularly inspect the blanket for signs of wear, tear, or thermal damage. Replace the blanket immediately if you notice significant degradation, holes, or thinning of the coating.
    • Cleaning: Shake or brush off loose debris and slag. Do not machine wash or use harsh chemicals, as this can degrade the vermiculite coating and compromise the blanket's heat resistance.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between vermiculite coated and uncoated fiberglass welding blankets?

Uncoated fiberglass provides basic heat and spark protection but is susceptible to abrasion and can allow heavy slag to burn through. Vermiculite coating significantly enhances the fiberglass base by increasing its temperature resistance, improving its ability to shed molten slag, and providing superior abrasion resistance, making it suitable for heavier-duty applications.

Can these blankets be used as vertical welding curtains?

Yes, all our vermiculite coated welding blankets feature brass grommets spaced every 24 inches along the edges. This allows them to be easily hung vertically to create protective welding curtains or enclosures, effectively containing sparks and shielding adjacent areas.

Which weight (20 oz., 27 oz., or 40 oz.) should I choose?

The choice depends on your specific application. Choose the 20 oz. blanket for light-duty spark protection and maximum flexibility. The 27 oz. blanket is the standard choice for medium to heavy-duty welding and moderate slag. For extreme applications involving heavy slag, gouging, or prolonged intense heat, the 40 oz. heavyweight blanket provides the necessary maximum protection.

      Excellent slag protection

Posted by Industrial Fab Shop on Aug 1st 2026

We use the 40oz blankets for heavy gouging and cutting. The vermiculite coating really sheds the molten slag much better than plain fiberglass. Very durable.
